      There wasn't when we were there. Seaweed on any beach is going to be cyclical, BUT these tourist hotels keep that kind of stuff cleaned up if it happens. We've been there multiple times and to many beaches in Cancun and never saw a problem.

    The car, bike and pedestrian traffic is terrible especially in Ajijic. I love that I can avoid the car traffic by using my bike but riding through on the Ciclopista through Ajijic is dangerous even going slow. It is supposed to be shared with pedestrians but some don't watch for bikes as they are facing the opposite direction of a bike behind them, don't stay to one side and is crowded with pedestrians at stop lights. On top of that cars block the Ciclopista all the time like when waiting to get on the Carretera, use it as a temporary parking spot, which should be a fine if caught and cars cross it way to fast when crossing or merging on the Carretera.

    • @TrulyRemarkableLife
      @TrulyRemarkableLife 13 днів тому

      Traffic can be a thing here - especially during certain times of the year. There is limited space available for traffic and it can get congested. I do use the pedestrian / ciclopista a lot when walking and always try to be cognizant of anyone using that lane. I tend to walk in the bike lane opposite the direction the bikes are coming so that I can see them and get out of the way. LOL KJ

    My Spanish isn't that great, but since I've come from multilingual San Francisco, I find that it's making the effort to communicate that's important. I've lived in Ajijic for 24 years full time and love it here. I have built houses and businesses with Mexican employees and have had good experiences with them. I had a restaurant (Indian food!) for 8 years and still cook every day. The availability of ingredients is great and there are wonderful restaurants and food stands all over this area. I'm never bored and have no Mexico fatigue ....

    We just stumbled across your video. Let me start by saying, "you two rock". My wife and I have been in MX for three years and, though We often feel the "brain fatigue" we never had the words to express it. So, thanks for giving us the words. And yes, we wanted to make chicken fried steak one night and, God Almighty! it took all day just to get that together. Another thing is, "How many tacos can you actually eat! after three years? We plan on going back and looking at your other videos but, I want to ask since this is three months old, How are you now? We live in Puerto Morelos but have been to Guadalajara and Lake Chapala. Hope you are both well and happy. We would love to meet you some time!!!!

      OH MY GOSH... I LOVE THIS! So glad the video was helpful. And YES... Tacos do get old but fortunately there are soooo many types of food here that we still enjoy them every chance we get. We do cook a lot though. So it makes it easier. But now I know the chicken fried speak will be a challenge. If you're ever back in our area definitely give us a heads up!

    Good for you guys, nice to see someone not expounding on all the flowery touristy stuff! Reality is what it is. 😎 The problem with a lot of gringos around here is that few have really traveled or lived in any other country but the US or Canada, they seem to think that this should be USA/CA south and constantly complain that it isn't. I've lived in 4 different countries over 35 yrs, dual Italian/American which was a 2.5 year bureaucratic nightmare to get that dual which opened the door to the whole EU. Guess what, those are the battles you wage staying 'legal' in any other country that is not your own... btw it didn't 'used' to be a piece of cake getting into the US if you weren't born there either. You have to come here with the knowledge that patience, flexibility and the enthusiasm to be where you've chosen to be are the keys to entering another culture and your world will become bigger, more compassionate and empathetic towards the rest of our human brotherhood because of it... we are far more alike than many care to admit. Now... can someone find me a plumber who actually knows what he's doing who doesn't cost the gringo moon? 🤣 🪇

    Definitely the car thing, but I miss rivers and trains. The town I grew up in was right on the Willamette River, 10 minutes from where the Clackamas met the Willamette and 40 minutes from where the Willamette met the Columbia. There were two railroad lines that went through town. The lonely train whistles at night.

      @roundpaws ah... I have found it very pleasant. The only smells ive experienced is along a couple drainage ditches. But it is not the entire thing. The Lake is low now and may run lower as the season goes... so I cant attest to that scenario of course. But so far it has not been unpleasant. Theres always a lot of people out and about along the Lake. -Craig

      It does depend on the plumbing system and what area youre in. However, many cities in Mexico evolved from on centuries-old communities and the infrastructure is unable to keep up. But yes... it is something youd need to check for the place you move.

    I love this kind of discussion! I’ve only visited Ajijic once for a short time and can already see how shocking it will be to come back to the US once we’re away for a year or two. I was really struck with how most people don’t look you in the eye or acknowledge your existence, especially at the grocery store, when we returned home. I really missed that Mexican friendliness! No lizards you say? For real? Are there snakes or scorpions? When I lived in San Diego I rarely saw wildlife. Too many humans, I guess. If the storms here weren’t almost always severe these days I would definitely miss the bipolar Texas weather, but I think I’ll find the stable weather there pretty peaceful. Thanks guys! I always enjoy your insights!

      I see small "garden geckos" and little horned lizards in the garden. Nothing more than 6ish inches. Not like big iguanas and other large lizards in other parts of Mexico. Coming from the Northeast there are LOT more insects than I've ever seen regularly, like giant cockroaches (mostly outside, and anyone who's seen a Palmetto bug would find these probably medium), many varieties of spiders (almost always harmless). I don't see scorpions in the village but my friends who live mountainside to. Snakes are also mainly in the mountains, most of them are harmless and they're all a necessary part of the ecosystem.

    Minute 14:00 : In 2010, both my husband and our oldest daughter were quite ill in Texas with different conditions, so I needed to travel back and forth between Belize and US very frequently. I began carrying people in their vehicles with mascotas in exchange for room and board along the way. Then I ran into a situation north of Soto La Marina where I made a pact with God that if he carried me out of this situation unharmed, I promised never to do it again and so I haven't. Back then, the cuota roads totaled about $200 USD. I always got a kick how the change that is given at one toll booth would not be accepted at the next toll booth if a bill had a tear, so I learned to never accept a torn bill. You were talking about the road situation and how things can change drastically. January 2006, we were in a Dodge Ram pulling a 34' pontoon loaded down. Just north of Tampico, we were on a detour road across a one lane levy that was a toll. After sweet hubby realized the change was incorrect, I teased him, "Well, where do you want to turn around?" At the end of the levy, the road went to crap and we thought surely that we had been misdirected, ambling through a local colonia at a very slow pace. A beautiful and very engaging young woman jumped onto the truck sidestep on my hubby's side [driver's side], hanging on the side mirror, and asked if we were looking for company. He didn't speak any Spanish at the time and he was confused. I told her in Spanish, hello first (of course) and then told her thanks very much, but we just passing through trying to get to Veracruz. She immediately switched hats (literally, moving the bill of her baseball cap from the front to reverse) from a possible evening companion to a local tour guide and her transport escort service was much appreciated.

    Greetings from Belize! Loved this discussion. I live outside US a little over 18 years. We had been gone for 7 years straight and when I went back, I had no idea how to pump gas on the new machines..not the pumping part, but how to set up the transaction. Our water is from rain vats here. First thing that I noticed at our daughter's house was the smell of chlorine in the shower...not that it was a bad smell, just it was a little overwhelming, like what I remembered as a kid in a public swimming pool. Other things were culture-related. My sweet hubby had to check me one day. We were in TX and I saw a Belize dealer tag on the truck in front of us at an intersection that wasn't busy and the light was red, so I hopped out and said, "Hi." Turns out, these guys worked as transmigrantes from Corozal and I knew them bc in 2010, I traveled 12 times along the same coastal route and we boondocked at the same Pemexes. "Baby, this ain't Corozal..this is Houston." 😁Everything was fine in this instance, but he was correct. Our daughters live in very nice areas with beautiful sidewalks and I love to walk. They both gently reminded me that since I'm not a student going to school, if I'm going for a walk, it's best to have a dog in front of me or I look a little indigent. 😆😆😆

      And you are so correct about the a/c thing. The grocery stores are so cold, I bring a coat. And on the greeting thing....our daughters know that I'm a person who strikes up a conversation with anyone in the mood to converse. In Belize, people are like me everywhere and is why I like to take public transport (here, it's combis and chicken busses). In Houston, however, conversation with strangers seems to be more of an oddity. Whenever I would get a tinge of homesickness for Belize, I would walk down to the local Mexican tienda [dogless 🙂] and feel much more like I was back at home, minus the paqueterias.

    Hi guys, We notice the price differences of course. We people seem to be rude when driving in the north. I found that when I shop up north and always say thank you or greet others, they seem taken aback. Holding doors for others shock them for instance. We also find that we use Spanish often without thinking, like in the drive thru, saying Gracias. We are from Washington state, and access to water , lakes , rivers is abundant unlike Mexico,where they exist but lack cleanliness. We always stop at Taco Bell on our first stop after the border crossing. Not Mexican food, but we like it.

    Mexico is overpopulated, polluted, chaotic, and its forests and jungles are disappearing at a rapid rate. Lake Chapala, for example, is one the most polluted lakes in the entire world; it's practically a reservoir of heavy metals and other toxic substances from thousands of factories in Jalisco (where Guadalajara, the state capital, and Ajijic are located) and neighboring states. Corruption, lax or non-existing environmental laws, and overpopulation are rapidly turning Mexico into a bleak place.
